Abstract. Science and technology are the foundation of our modern society, geopolitical and strategic decisions, ensuring prosperity and progress. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand the context in which scientific and technological development takes place, to assess its macro trends, and to realize how today’s decisions affect future opportunities and readiness.
The defense-industrial complex, as an integral part of the overall economic process, is no exception when it comes to using the latest scientific and technological developments to improve, strengthen, and increase the competitiveness of its components.
The purpose of the work is to identify promising scientific research areas in terms of the types and branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the purpose of providing information to the government, manufacturers of weapons and military equipment. The study includes a review of global scientific and technological trends based on an analysis of publications by international organizations and the results of our own research on the forecast directions of scientific research in the military sphere based on the Web of Science database of scientific publications.
Based on the results of the work, the main trends in scientific research by type of Armed Forces for the coming years have been identified.
AI methods, modeling and simulation, machine learning, virtual reality, autonomy, neural networks, including quantum networks, 5G communications, and wireless communications are present in scientific areas related to all branches and types of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thematic areas related to materials science (2-D materials, biomaterials, materials for military vehicles, especially for corrosion protection, infrared camouflage materials, polyimide/graphene/Fe3O4 hybrid aerogel composite films, 3-D printing) also apply to all branches of the military and are the second most promising areas of research for the coming years.
These trends will shape the defense landscape of science and technology over the next 3-5 years. They will not only influence scientific cooperation and research, but also defense capabilities, military operations, and the work of defense industry enterprises.
Since science and technology are an integral part of achieving military and security goals, knowledge of relevant scientific and technological trends will allow the government to be more strategically prepared for the future and to respond as certain trends develop.
